5 Potential Songs

For this project I will be working in a pair with Ceri Lewis and before deciding on what song we would choose to use for our music video we shortlisted five possible songs. A clear theme between these songs is that they are all from the same genre of indie; we have chosen this genre as we personally have the most interest and knowledge in this genre.

1) Take Me To Church-Hozier

A clear reason why Take Me To Church by the Irish, singer, songwriter and musician Hozier is a potential choice is due to the fact that both Ceri and I have connections with dancers who are experienced in performing this song. Due to their knowledge, reliability and their very professional and skilled talents we believe this would be an real asset to our music video, helping the video to look as professional as possible. We are also possibly considering having parts/all of the music video set in church, which would be an illustrative technique to create an very literal video. Also due to various connections Ceri and I have we would be able to have access a Church to film in. Another aspect for this video that Ceri and I are considering is having a female "artist" to perform the song, which would also make the music video an performance video. As the song is originally performed by the male Hozier Ceri and I have found a very good cover performed by the female singer Sofia Karlberg. This also allows for Take Me To Church to be a possible song.

2) Hold Back The River-James Bay

Also matching to the genre of indie music is the song Hold Back The River by James Bay who is an English singer/songwriter who plays the guitar. As this is very similar type and feel of song, if Ceri and I were to use this song there is a possibility that the dancers would also be able to capably choreograph a dance this song; however this would not be as effective as the well rehearsed dance for Take Me To Church. Hold Back The River would allow me and Ceri to experiment with various different nature settings and the combination of the setting could create a very unique and interesting video, which is what Ceri and I are aiming. This would also allow us to use illustrative techniques to create an literal video. An key element of this song is the distinct guitar that begins the song and is continued to be played throughout the song; Ceri and I also know a skilled guitarist who playing this would look authentic and realistic. This help our video to look professional and completed to a high standard, as well as making the video partly performance.

3) Ho Hey- Lumineers

Ho Hey performed by the American indie band The Lumineers is another song that Ceri and I considered. We considered Ho Hey due to the fact that this song has a different feel to the other songs that we have considered; slightly shorter and much faster pace this song opens up to allow Ceri and I to create a quirky video. This would give us more freedom and ideas in creating the video. Also featuring in this song is the key sound of a guitar that Ceri and I could really utilise via our guitarist as a key feature to create an performance video. Potential drawbacks for Ho Hey is the shortness of the song and the fact that Ceri and I would struggle more to create an authentic looking band, which would be needed as this song was created by a band.

4) Blame It On Me- George Ezra

George Ezra is a English singer/songwriter and musician who also uses a guitar as part of his image and icongraphy. Blame It On Me is also a faster paced song that carries a very cheerful and upbeat feel. With an clearer and more prominent beat, the video Ceri and I could create from this video would be more active and busy. Still fitting the indie genre and still music Ceri and I enjoy and feel most comfortable creating a video for, Blame It On Me is definitely a song that Ceri and I could use. By considering Blame It On Me Ceri and I have a range of songs to choose from, while still being in the same genre, allowing us to come with a range of ideas and deepen our knowledge on different types of music videos for different songs.

5) You've Got The Love- Florence and the Machine

You've Got The Love is performed the English band Florence and the Machine, which is lead by the lead singer Florence Welch and Isabella Summers the keyboardist. This song is performed by a predominantly female band this would be more beneficial to Ceri and I as we know more females who would be comfortable and at ease performing in front of a camera; this would allow us to construct a band that would fit the song far better than a male band. The song itself is also very different to any other songs we are considering; also faster paced and more upbeat this song would allow us to explore more video ideas. A possible video idea would be a narrative video of a love story due to the lyrics and the flow of the song. Still firmly in the indie genre You've Got The Love will allow Ceri and I the option of a more upbeat and quirky song.
