Different Genres

Pop

Taylor Swifts music video to her 2014 pop song "Blank Space" follows the conventions of telling a story, so a narrative music video. As with most pop music videos this story is centered around love romance, with there being numerous costume and setting changes throughout the video. The female is portrayed to be very feminine with perfect make-up and hair and often dressed in dressed and lighter colours. The video is presented to the audience through the viewpoint of Taylor/character and links to the theme of the song.
For my own music video I will take inspiration from the way a narrative style as been used, as I feel this is very effective in conveying and relating the song and the narrative this brings to audiences. As a narrative this keeps audiences engaged and interested until the end of the video.

Grime/ British Hip Hop

The 2017 song "Big For Your Boots" by Stormzy matches the grime genre by the settings and the clothes of the actors and Stormzy himself within the video. This video is a performance music video with Stormzy singing directly to the audience. The setting is of an urban city (most likely London) which is the origins of British Grime, the people involved are wearing clothes that would be associated, particularly by an older audience, to clothes worn by "youths" who "hang around" on the street. Brands such as Adidas and items of clothing like hoodies appear frequently. This fashion will appear fashionable and up to date with a younger, modern audience. The setting changes. The video is shot so the audience follow Stormzy from location to location, with him often making direct eye contact with the camera and audience.

For my own music video I will take inspiration from the cut shots used to change locations and the repetition of the locations used. This repetition will provide familiarity to audiences, which is something they will enjoy. I will also take inspiration from the way this music video perfectly matches it's genre, which will satisfy audiences.

Pop Punk

The 2014 song "This Is Gospel" was released by the pop punk band Panic! At The Disco in both a original and acoustic version, with a video for both. I am focusing on the video for the acoustic version, which is a performance video, slightly mixed with narrative. The video consists of the bands front-man Brendon Urie playing the piano and singing as various items fall on the piano. Brendon is performing here, however the symbolism of items falling onto the piano tells a story, as the items start off as pleasant such as confetti before changing to be more messy like food and slime. The narrative behind this matches to the song, of a love story gone wrong and ending up sour.

From this video I plan to take inspiration from the mixture of performance and narrative, as I believe the mix of both is effective and creates a good looking and interesting video. I also really like the different camera angles used within this video, primarily the emphasis from the high angled shots, as this creates a interesting video for audiences to watch.

Rock/Britpop

The British rock band Oasis released the song "Wonderwall" in 1995, before creating a music video in 2008. The music video is a mix of performance and alternative. The band is filmed performing the song, mostly sat on chairs as shown from the screenshot on the left, with cut shots to show other scenes. This is where the alternative comes into the video, as the shots are mismatched to music video such scenes including clowns and other circus acts. The video is all black and white with tiny sparks of colour of green, blue and yellow for the guitar. There is also an variety of shots used such as one styled like Andy Warhol's pop art in the squares of four and twelve.

I plan on taking inspiration from the way this music video really works with the simple back ground and mise en scene to create an effective video. I like the differences in shots and the way that some shots are recurring (such as Gallagher singing in front of the swirl background) and the simple but effective use of colour. I don't plan currently to make a black and white music video, however from "Wonderwall" I can take inspiration from the careful use of colour and use this in my own video.

Indie/Alternative

The Kooks released the music for their song "Junk Of The Heart (Happy)" in 2011, the video is an peformance video. The begins with different shots combined into geometry effect with red and blue as the main colours used. The same effect is also used at the end of the video, and in the mid section of the video the band perform the song in a plain large room, using different coloured lights for effects such as shadows. There are also a couple of shots of a girl adding a slight narrative to the video, however the video is mainly performance.

From this video I will inspiration from the geometrical shape effect, as this allows a lot of different shots to be shown on the screen while looking interesting to audiences. Throughout this research I am learning the importance of colour within music videos, as the effect this can have to keep audiences interested and engaged. This music video also shows a simple and plainer background and mise en scene can still be effective and used to enhance the effects of colour, which is information I will use in creating my own video.

Soul

The 2014 song "Call Me" by the soul band St. Paul & The Broken Bones. This video is a mix of performance and narrative. The screen and background remain the same with half the side being the mans apartment and the other half the woman's apartment. The narrative matches the song about the man waiting for the woman to call him, This music video also matches the genre as some of the shots place clear empathise on the man signing the higher longer notes by shallow focus and close up shots, and the wide shots show be to be dancing in a way associated with the genre.

I really like how the band feature naturally in the background, and the way some shots are dedicated to the band. I like this casual style and the matching outfits of the band and personally find the band to be more interesting and would like to incorporate this style into my music video.

Operatic Pop

Katherine Jenkins released her 2009 song "Angel" accompanied by a music video. The video is a very simple performance video with Katherine sat facing the camera and singing for the whole video. This direct address will satisfy the older audiences who are most likely to be watching this video, as there will be less need from them for fancier effects or a narrative. The video is entirely filmed or edited into a muted grey-scale tone which fits to the genre of operatic pop as this is softer music. A variety of different shot angles are used to create effect and differentiation as well as slow moving zooms and slight panning.

Overall there is little I would take from this video as this not related to any genre I would consider making a music video for. I do however like the extensive of camera shots to create the effect of the video being viewed from different perspective.

 K Pop

Bangtan Boys released "Boy In Luv" in 2014. The group consists of 7 members all who feature in the music video, which is a mix of performance and narrative video. The story follows the song of a boy in love with a girl in school and how they come to be together. Throughout the video there is breaks from the narrative where the band perform and dance. Lighting such as flashes and different camera angles including steep high angles and low angles, are used to continue telling the narrative,as well as changes of setting.

From this music I will take inspiration for how the dance scenes are shot as I plan to have dance incorporated into my video. I like the way a wide simple space and background is used to allow audiences to focus on the dance moves. The fast paced editing also allows audiences to view a lot of the dance while still remained entertained, which I will consider for my own video.

Rap

The 2009 song "Without Me" by Eminem has an abstract with sections of performance. The video has many different locations and interweaving scenes, some which match the song and some that don't. This music video takes on a comic book style with speech-bubbles and subtitles and this continues to make up the abstract part of the video. There is also performance in this video as Eminem sings and performs directly to the camera
