Music Video

To complete the editing and final post production, our group of seven split into smaller groups and I worked with my partner. We used iMovie on an iMac to edit the footage after uploading the clips. Overall editing took around three hours during which we improved our editing skills. We began by uploading the footage, choosing the clip from the selection of clips we filmed and trimming them to size. Once the clips were the lengths we wanted we joined them together using a simple cut editing as this was the same used in the professional music video. Next we made the clips black and white, again to mimic Four, Five Seconds, and for each clip changed the gradient, contrast and saturation to create to the same shade of black and white. After this we muted the sound on the original clips before overlaying the song. We continued to work as a whole group to film our video; the first shots we filmed were of the male performers as there were less of those to film. To allow for the music video to look as effective as possible we also did some rehearsals during which we set up the camera for the shots. We used a Panasonic HC-V700 camera to film all of the footage. During filming we really focussed on the lighting as this was a key element to the professional music video, to create the correct lighting we used studio lights and a light box. The light box proved to be really effective in creating the silhouette shadow effect that we wanted and for the rest of the shots we positioned the studio lights in different areas. We used both the zoom on the camera and physically moved the camera to achieve the range of shots (mid, close up and extreme close up), during this time having the story board was very useful and helpful to understand the shots needed. To complete this preliminary task I worked in a group with six other people and chose to re-create the music video to Four, Five Seconds by Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney. The video lasts 3 minutes and 12 seconds and to story board the video we split into three groups, taking a minute each. I worked with two others to story board from minute 2:00 to 3:12. Within my smaller group to story board we split the tasks up between our strengths; I took the role of the timings and annotating while my partners did the drawing. By doing this we were able to create an accurate story board. After creating the story boards as a whole group we began to plan the music video. We decided to film the first minute of the music video, as we felt this minute would be achievable to create an effective looking music video with the knowledge and experience we have.  We decided that Tegan would be Rihanna and that we would ask drama students to act the other roles.
